The Science and Public Policy Institute
Incorporated in 1994, the Science and Public Policy Institute (SPPI) is a 501(c)(3) organization devoted to advancing scientific and policy debate in the public health arena. Its purposes are clear:
- to provide a forum for nonpartisan, public disclosure and information on health and environmental issues based on a strong scientific foundation;
- to engage in independent and nonpartisan study of our Nation’s health policy;
- to provide constructive scientific input to decision makers on significant or critical science and public policy issues;
- to disseminate the results of such investigation and inquiry in peer-review journals or other nonpartisan media; and
- to make available to the general public educational programs and materials that will enhance the public’s understanding of national health public policy.
Brief history of projects in which SPPI has been involved:
- Since inception in 1989, contracts and grants from several branches of the U.S. federal government including the EPA, NIOSH, Centers for Disease Control, National Institutes of Health -- National Institute of Allergy and Infections Disease, National Cancer Institute, Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
- Various directed research grants and contracts from private foundations and associations
- General studies of toxic substances in the environment and workplace
- Public health research ranging from post-market surveillance registries to stop-smoking campaigns...
- Projects involving drafting of legislation on the state and federal level --- including the enabling legislation for the Health Related Authorities of Superfund and the establishment of the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry
- Participation in Congressional Hearings on environmental contamination and workplace safety
- Breast Implant Public Health Program -- in conjunction with the Food and Drug Administration to resolve conflicts regarding local complications from ruptured silicone breast implants
- Wireless Technology Research project on mobile phone health risks
SPPI is actively working to house additional projects in the environmental, public health and consumer product arenas.
